The Puppet Storytellers: Weaving Tales Through Craft – Kids Take Over UBC 2025!

The Puppet Storytellers: Weaving Tales Through Craft

Join Amai Campbell-Kamangirira and the First Nations House of Learning (Longhouse & Xwi7xwa Library) for storytime sessions in both hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ and English! Then unleash your creativity and step into the world of storytelling through art with The Puppet Storytellers: Weaving Tales Through Craft. In this hands-on workshop, participants will craft their very own characters to bring stories to life. Whether it’s a whimsical creature or a heroic figure, your creations will have their own personalities and voices.

Once your puppets are complete, you’ll have the chance to stage a mini performance, weaving your newly crafted characters into exciting tales. This activity encourages imaginative play, teamwork, and creativity, and is perfect for individuals or groups of all ages who love storytelling and hands-on crafting.

WHAT IS KIDS TAKE OVER UBC?

Kids Take Over UBC is an open-door arts and culture festival for families to enjoy UBC’s world-class assets and public spaces together while interacting with artists, musicians and more. The event features on-campus museums, cultural amenities, faculties, and student organizations coming together to offer family-friendly activities that showcase their unique talents, skills and interests. Hosted annually since 2018, this festival was inspired by Takeover Day, first launched in the UK to celebrate children and young people’s contributions to museums, galleries, arts organizations, archives, and heritage sites.

This year marks the 7th edition of Kids Take Over UBC. Families are invited to explore their way across campus through a variety of arts & culture activities for all ages, including storytelling, cultural craft and STEM workshops, guided tours, live performances, and much more.  In addition, this year features a new outdoor zone at Lee Square, with live musical and dance performances on stage throughout the day.
