Job Description

Xwi7xwa Library Hosts provide customer service support to students, faculty and staff, including checking out library materials, welcoming and directing patrons, assisting in retrieving and re-shelving library materials, connecting patrons to needed services, and helping patrons to book appointments with librarians as needed. Xwi7xwa Library is part of the First Nations House of Learning, and provides support for Indigenous students and to all those exploring Indigenous topics.

Typical job duties include:

Shelving library materials; providing assistance to patrons in locating library materials in the open stacks; providing back-up basic customer/public service at the circulation desk; troubleshooting library equipment (computers, printers, scanners, photocopiers etc.); referring complex problems to other Xwi7xwa team members as appropriate; collecting and maintaining patron interaction statistics; providing general operations assistance including charging/discharging library materials; notifying full-time staff of building or security issues; setting up and/or dismantling displays as required, and searching for lost materials. Tasks are of moderate complexity and attention to detail is important in all aspects of the work.

Students hired for these positions report directly to the Access Services Assistant and work all Xwi7xwa staff. While full-time staff are always available to answer questions and provide guidance to student assistants during their shifts, independent work is required.

Students in these positions contribute to our goal of creating an exceptional information, research and user experience for students, faculty and community members using the Library.
